The Journey Home

Posted by Back-From-Purgatory - February 1st, 2013

So... I decided to try my hand at Bosa's "Dreams of Splendor" contest about a month ago... He went out of his way to send me an invite, so I figured why not. So, I spent the last month struggling against a really nasty case of writers block, and one day... like... 2 days ago... I was mucking around in FL Studio, being upset that I couldn't seem to come up with anything decent. I got fed up, closed down what I was working on, opened up Synthesia, and played one of my favorite songs to play on piano (Packaged... although I edited it a little bit to split up the hands and removed the vocal part).

I finished the song, and decided to give writing another shot, so I opened up FL Studio again, started mucking around on my keyboard, and in the span of about 5-6 hours, I had a nearly 4 min piano track practically finished.
On top of that... I really, really liked it... It had a nice melody, a good progression, and I jumped a lot of hurdles that I usually stumble over when writing longer songs.

So, I added some more stuff on top, drums, a pad, and a smooth lead synth, made a few tweaks here and there... and in about 12 hours total...
...this came out:
The Journey Home
Also: Piano only version

I'm pretty happy with it... been a while since I've felt this satisfied with a song I've written... I'd wager this will be up on my favorites with Them and Yin.

So yeah... give it a listen, leave a review, let me know what you think.

And as always... the song is totally open to interpretation... I love hearing different peoples interpretations of my stuff.

I enjoyed it a lot, and I don't feel that I agree with FooRight's 6/10. I've just woken up from a broken three hours of sleep though, so I'm too delirious to write a review.

I enjoyed it in spite of that, however.

Thanks!

I'm proud to have left the first review. :3

But dude, FooRight's review? 3/5 stars doesn't seem legit.

I think he left it as 3/5 as a "neutral" vote... as he said he wanted to know how I intended to portray the song before he voted... Just my guess... because otherwise his review was pretty positive.

I'm not really a musical person, so I don't really have an interpretation of it, but it sounds good.

Good to know!

You did a very good job. Though I haven't played the piano as a musician, I still like piano-based music and you show your command of the keyboard.

To be fair, I didn't play that... At least not in full. I'm not good enough to play like that all at once yet. There's a lot of jumping around in this song, which is actually a real weak point for me on keyboard. I did however write all the melodies by playing a piece at a time on the keyboard.

I also exported the midi so I can practice it in Synthesia.

I think the Piano only version sounded better than the original. Don't have an interpretation of it though.

Is why I have both versions, some people are bound to not like the fancied up version.

Writer's block is awful. How great that you were able to overcome it and produce something you really liked. :)

Indeed.

Your new icon is cute

<3 <3

why are you ignoring me purgy? T_T

I've no idea what you're talking about.

So you like yin? Or do you just like DTB?

Yin is one of my favorite characters in anime in general.. although I did quite enjoy DTB as well.

I didnt like season 2 as much as 1. So you watch anime quite a bit?

Same here... Season 2 I thought was kind of... not awful... but a let down compared to the first..

And yes... according to myanimelist, I've spent approximately 57 days of my life watching anime.

Damn son. Not bad. You have seen The melancholy of haruhi suzumiya im sure?

Of course.

Idk, I have watched so much anime and i always think how good that one is...it is my fav I guess....not the characters specifically, just the whole thing.

It is pretty good... although I don't think I'd label it as one of my favorites... but it's close.

Name one of your favs, i also liked clannad.....I guess I' not into action.

Steins;Gate would definitely be one of my favorites.

Have you ever seen clannad?

Of course. Clannad After Story made me cry like a baby.

You should join sevkitty forums because youre cool but youre not on NG forums much anymore and you like anime and you know nightowl aswell. <a href="http://sevkitty.com/bbs/index.php">http://sevkitty.com/bbs/index.php</a>

I'm on the NG forums all the time actually... I'm just lurking most of the time. And I'm actually working on my own domain at the moment... so no promises.

Alright, fair enough then lol. I just never saw you post anymore.

I do... every so often.

Just re-listened to both versions of the song today. I like the original better than the piano version now.

That's perfectly fine, I figured it'd be a 50:50 thing for most people, some people like having more stuff on piano pieces, other people can't stand having drums/synths over a piano piece.

Yin is my waifu.

She is quite adorable, isn't she.

She really is.
I have a pretty epic collection of .gif files featuring our's truly.

I'm not sure I have any Yin gifs... actually, I don't have many gifs at all... kind of collect those on a "need this" basis.

Yin is cute, yeah ive visited ur site though, pretty cool

Are you talking my current forum? Or my actual own domain? Cause.. if you're talking about my actual domain... it's like... bare... so I'm not sure how you'd think it's cool in the state it's in...

... But I won't complain... just means it can't get much worse.
