Dead HDD

Posted by Back-From-Purgatory - July 24th, 2013

UPDATE:
It seems my PC decided it didn't like what happened and fixed itself... Fortunately, it seems it was just a software corruption. Late last night, not long before I went to bed, I was marathoning the second season of Oreimo on my PS3, so my PC was left doing its own thing... and when I took a short break I noticed a maintenance pop up on my PC, said to Reboot to fix drive errors.

By the time I saw this, it was like 4am... so I just shut it down and went to bed. When I got up this morning (Ok... noon), started up my PC, it went through a "Scanning and repairing" cycle on the windows screen... restarted itself... and now everything seems fine again.
Wooooo!

I still think my HDD needs to be replaced due to some freezing and such I've been getting lately, but at least for now, my PC is still operational. Finally caught a break.

------------------------------------------------

So... once again, my HDD has died, this time due to a power outage while I was in the middle of backing some stuff up to an external hard drive.

I am still able to use my PC... however... practically nothing works except Internet Explorer... and oddly enough... my collection of anime. Besides that... I can't download, I can't install things, and I can't run any other applications (Be them for music, games, or general utility)

Unfortunately, Skype is included in the list of things that will not start, so those of you who have me added, I won't be online for a couple days at least while I go buy a new HDD and get everything reinstalled again. For now, the only way to contact me is via Newgrounds. Even if my HDD craps out entirely, I can still check NG via my PS3.

Fortunately, I was suspecting my HDD was getting ready to die and had backed up pretty much everything I couldn't afford to lose a week or 2 ago.
Still... It is such a pain in the ass to get all the way to the store I usually get my parts from (It's a city over and on the exact opposite end from where I am), then reinstall absolutely everything. I managed to get 3 days off this week... and looks like I'll be spending pretty much all of that getting my PC back up to speed again.

FML.

Thats sucks....
Well at least you have your anime. My OS got a worm/virus thingy the other day and was sucking everything up, it ate mostly everything, even my anime. But it was only on that partition, so maybe like 500gb worth of stuff. Im glad my terabyte hard drive wasnt touched (where most of my anime is) I eventually reinstalled windows and got rid of it.
I got everything recovered and back in like 2 or 3 days, so Im good.
How big is your external hard drive? I used to have one and it was like 300gb. I plan on buying a much larger one.

My external drive I think is 250GB, which is enough for me to back up all the stuff that I can't simply redownload, such as project files for my music, my music folder, pictures, that kind of stuff.

As for worms and such, I've never had one, I'm very anal about the security on my PC, and Avast coupled with Malwarebytes pretty much brickwalls any malware that tries to make its way onto my system.

Dang... not good to hear at all... hope you manage to get it all sorted. That's a bugger and a half...

Well, seems to be fixed for now, guess it was just software corruption due to the power outage while I was transferring stuff to my external HDD.

Like I say in my post though.... I still suspect my HDD has seen better days, so I still plan on buying a new HDD soon. Just so I at least have a back up for when it does bite the bullet.

Ore imo season2 just wasnt as appealing to me as the first

I liked it.

Your avatar is really high quality, who is it?

Gumi Megpoid (A vocaloid), changed my profile theme to her shortly after I actually got her English voice bank.

Figured it would be appropriate now that I'll be releasing songs with her voice on them now.

Talk about ouch. I'd say that in addition to getting a new primary HDD and an external drive, get a second internal HDD so you'll have two internal drives for the extra redundancy. That way, if your primary fails again, you have another one to go to right away. Oh, you might also want to get a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply).

Yeah, I'm seriously considering running more than 1 HDD now, as well as possibly getting a UPS. I'm not fond of the idea of having to replace my HDD every single year.

What brand(s) of HDDs have you used?

Seagate is what I'm using right now, I dunno about the past.

Seagate's a good brand. Western Digital's also got some good stuff.

They are also the only 2 brands sold here that seem to have 2TB HDDs... Although the Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD doesn't have very good reviews (what I'm using currently), a lot of people have had reliability issues with it, including a lot of people getting it DOA apparently.

Actually... None of the 2TB HDDs that I can get locally seem to have anything above 3/5 star reviews.

Regardless, I prefer to make my own decision, and at the very least... my HDD wasn't DOA right at purchase, which is a plus in my book.
